The woods may seem to offer shelter from the storm, and it's true that the wind and rain are a little less strong under the shelter of the trees. However, those same trees can easily become a death-trap, groaning and cracking under the force of the storm. The ground is unsteady underfoot, and parts of the road have been washed out already, giving way to deep, sucking mud.
All in all, best not to linger. It's all too easy to get lost...
